Federica Pellegrini: Swimming sensation!

Federica Pellegrini rebounded from the disappointment of missing a medal in the 400 metres freestyle final by setting the fastest qualifying time in the 200 freestyle heats at the London Olympics on Monday.

 

The Italian finished a disappointing fifth in the 400m final on Sunday after going into the event as the reigning world champion and world record holder but made a better start to her defence of the 200 gold medal she won in Beijing four years ago.

Racing in the lane next to American teenager Missy Franklin, Pellegrini won her morning heat in one minute 57.16 seconds, the fastest time overall.

A native of Mirano, in the province of Venice, she is currently the women's 200 m freestyle (long course and short course) and 400 m (long course) freestyle world record holder. At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Pellegrini became the first woman ever to breach the 4 minute barrier in 400 m freestyle with the time 3:59.15. Pellegrini is the first female Olympic champion in the history of Italian swimming; she is also the only Italian swimmer to have set world records in more than one event.

Hot German Judoka Tarangul all set to glitter

Rony Tarangul has kickstarted her Judo campaign with win against Russia's Natalia Kuziutina in women's 52kg category.

The victory leap

In 2008 Tarangul won the silver medal at the European Championships. With this result Tarangul qualified for the Beijing Olympics, where she reached a 9th place overall. After winning her first bout against Uzbek Sinura Djuraeva she lost narrowly to Misato Nakamura of Japan in the round of 16 and then to Ilse Heylen of Belgium in the repechage round. At the 2009 World Judo Championships Tarangul won the Bronze medal in her category, marking her biggest international success so far.
