Sets World record to win 200m backstroke
American teenager Missy Franklin set a world record in the 200 backstroke Friday for her third gold and fourth medal overall at the London Olympics. Franklin clocked 2 minutes, 4.06 seconds, 0.75 quicker than the mark set by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe at the 2009 world championships in Rome in a now-banned bodysuit.
In her first individual event on the third day of the swimming competition, the 100-meter backstroke, Franklin won the gold medal with a time of 58.33, beating her own national record.
Franklin won her third medal of the meet, a gold, in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay with Dana Vollmer, Shannon Vreeland, and Allison Schmitt. Swimming the lead-off leg, Franklin posted a time of 1:55.96 and the American team finished with a time of 7:42.92, a new American record.
